One Murder In A Small Town with Kristin Kreuk's Cassandra annoyed me all season, but an EP had the perfect explanation after the finale

Murder in a small town came to Fox at the start of television programming in fall 2024, with the crime series starring Rossif Sutherland as Police Chief Karl Alberg and SmallvilleKristin Kreuk plays local librarian Cassandra Lee. Essential to the series was the refreshing approach to the romance between Alberg and Cassandra, and the first season ended with an exciting two-parter. However, it still didn’t answer a question that had been bothering me all season: How can a crime series continue to have two main characters when one of the main actors often has nothing to do with murder or crime?

Well, when I was lucky enough to talk to executive producer Jeff Wachtel about it Murder in a small town Season 2 (hopefully as part of the 2025 TV schedule) I asked: It’s difficult to find ways to incorporate Cassandra – wonderfully played by Kristin Kreuk – into stories when the crime is so much more central to the story than her work in the Library and community? Wachtel responded with a very sensible explanation:

The answer is: yes, it is. I’ve done shows where the spouse wasn’t as integrated, and I always joked that they were “vegetable chopping scenes” where the main character was at home, and he’s usually a man, and there’s the woman who chops and cooks vegetables. holds the phone in the crook of his neck. So she’s not the A story, and she can’t get too caught up in the A story or it’ll feel too convenient. The way we answer that in season two, without diving deep into spoiler alert territory, is that she simply ran for local office.

Cassandra wasn’t sidelined to the point of chopping vegetables whenever Alberg called her, but the EP’s reaction gave me a lot more confirmation of what I’ve been wondering all season about what a show with two leads is like could only concentrate very much on one of her stories. It would be terribly contrived if the crime affected the library in some way every week, and pretty unfair to Cassandra if she was kidnapped every week just to get her into the A-story!

And it would be a shame if Kristin Kreuk had to serve as second lead rather than co-lead indefinitely, especially after what Rossif Sutherland said about her casting. Luckily that is Murder in a small town The team used the season one finale to explore how Cassandra could draw more attention to her own stories in a second season. While he didn’t delve too deeply into spoilers for what comes next, Wachtel explained the plans for Kristin Kreuk’s character going forward:

Let’s hope she gets elected, and then she’ll tell her own stories, some of which may conflict with Karl’s plans, because she doesn’t really strike me as a law-and-order type. We’re going to see these two very powerful, intelligent and stubborn people (and) I think we’re going to have a lot of fun with them. Not just a romantic discourse but also a socio-political discourse as they have two different approaches towards the community and crime etc. I think that’s the organic way we can incorporate them into big stories in season two.

The Season 1 finale ended with Cassandra deciding that she could live with Alberg’s work as a police officer, which is really a sign of how much she cares about him after her harrowing experience with the kidnapper! The couple shared a deep kiss before the credits rolled, ending the first season on a high note while also laying the groundwork for the future.

For Karl, his second daughter will come to Gibsons and give him a full house. Plus, serial killer Tommy Cummins was still alive and now has reason to hold a grudge against Alberg and his family. Cassandra’s arc in Season 2 feels clearer as she told Alberg about her plan to run for city council, making it clear enough that her love for him doesn’t mean blindly supporting the police. Added to this is the ongoing mystery of what happened in Sacramento.

All in all, I hope so more than ever after Jeff Wachtel answered my big question about Kristin Kreuk as Cassandra Murder in a small town scores with a second season sooner rather than later. The executive producer told CinemaBlend that “Fox gave us some money for scripts” and that they “broke the first four episodes with full stories,” so they were already making progress before they got the official word.

Right now, you can rewatch the entire first season streaming at any time with a Hulu subscription. I’m tempted to do just that this winter and watch Cassandra’s stories, knowing that there are bigger plans for her in Season 2.
