Live updates on California wildfires: Raging wildfires have surrounded Los Angeles, killing at least five people and destroying hundreds of homes, while more than 100,000 people were ordered to evacuate.

What is the current status? A new wildfire has reportedly broken out in the scrubland of the Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles Fire Chief Kristin Crowley announced, as five additional fires continue to ravage the county. Strong Santa Ana winds, normally associated with a high risk of wildfires, fanned the flames and hampered firefighting efforts.

How are the residents affected? The fires devastated communities, particularly in Pacific Palisades and Hollywood Hills, known for their wealthy residents. In Pacific Palisades, home to celebrities like Jamie Lee Curtis and Mark Hamill, there was widespread destruction that required evacuations. Houses and properties worth millions were destroyed by the flames, and more than 1,000 buildings were destroyed. There were also evacuations in the Hollywood Hills, with a new fire breaking out and threatening iconic areas. Nearly a million homes lost power and schools closed across the country. Many evacuees, including both ordinary residents and celebrities, were forced to seek shelter elsewhere.
