Overall, it’s snowing in western North Carolina, with temperatures expected to be in the teens

ASHEVILLE – Many mountain school systems were closed and some city services were delayed or canceled in Asheville as snow fell across much of western North Carolina in the early morning hours of Dec. 2.

A measurable 0.1 inch of snowfall fell at Asheville Regional Airport at 7 a.m., ending a “snow drought” for a city that had only received traces of it so far this winter, according to National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Kimball.

City and weather officials warned of the possibility of black ice, especially as temperatures drop this evening, December 2nd. Asheville road crews have been out since the early morning hours, clearing up the streets, a news release said. They witnessed several accidents caused by black ice and urged the community to drive carefully, especially at high altitudes.

How much snow fell in the region and where did it snow the most?

Kimball said there were traces of up to a half-inch of snow in the Asheville area and most of Buncombe County by 7 a.m. There was some trace snow in southern Henderson County.
