The first installment of the movie musical “Wicked” has reigned supreme, defying “both gravity and box office expectations” in its opening weekend, according to NBC.

Since its release on Friday, November 22, the film has made a massive debut worldwide, grossing $164 million. According to Variety, it is now the biggest domestic debut of a film based on a Broadway musical.

During an interview with Collider, the film’s music composer, Stephen Schwartz, who also co-wrote the original Broadway show’s music and lyrics, shared why “Wicked” had to be split into two parts.

“Most of it has already been shot. Ultimately we decided to make two films because we couldn’t fit everything into one film without, in our opinion, really compromising the story,” he said. “We figured no one wanted to sit and watch a movie for four hours (laughs), so it was split into two movies. But yeah, most of it was shot.”
