Patrick J. Adams says “too much alcohol” and depression led to his early exit from “Suits.”

Patrick J. Adams revealed that drinking too much alcohol and poor mental health led to his early exit from Suits.

While speaking with Jesse Tyler Ferguson on his podcast Dinner’s on Me, Adams admitted the reasons why he left the series after Season 7. According to him, alcohol addiction and mental health issues forced him to quit early.

“I didn’t take good care of my mental health and drank too much at the end of season seven,” Adams said. “I was in a phase where I was living a pretty unexplored life. Pretty miserable (and) I would say pretty depressed. I didn’t have the resources to deal with this depression other than just spending money and drinking too much and not really knowing how to talk about it.”

He added: “I would numb myself to deal with my insecurities and fears. And they just didn’t work. And they certainly put a strain on my relationship, but they also made me a very unpresent father. That was a breaking point for me when I thought, “I think I should probably stop drinking because I don’t want to be that dad.” The best thing I ever did for myself was to stop drinking. It just had to happen so all these other things could happen.”

Adams was absent from the last two seasons of the hit US legal drama. He told Ferguson that as Season 8 got closer, he realized that the only real reason he was thinking about doing the show was still the money, which ultimately wasn’t a good reason.

“The only reason to stay was … money,” Adams said. “I didn’t know what else to offer. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and think about the money (Gabriel Macht) he has made in the last two years, but I haven’t regretted the decision for a second. It was the right thing for my marriage.”

However, Adams returned for the final two episodes of the series – reprising his role as Michael Ross.

The Suits franchise is stronger than ever after seeing a massive online surge when it hit streamers a few years ago. A spin-off series titled “Suits: LA” will debut on NBC in February 2025. The film stars Stephen Amell and Suits alum Macht is slated for a three-episode guest role as Harvey Specter.

It’s not yet known whether Adams will appear in the spin-off, but he remains connected to the world of Suits through a rewatch podcast he co-hosts with series co-star Sarah Rafferty.
