A Animal rescue and animal shelter in Delaware County that was severely damaged by a storm has started over thanks to a community of volunteers in South Jersey.

Last year, dozens of trees fell and damaged barns and fences at Happy Heart-Happy Home Farm & Rescue in Glen Mills.

“The day of the storm I really thought we had lost everything, like basically how do we rebuild from nothing,” said Lauren Rosborough, who began the rescue in 2018.

Volunteers and donors across the country helped Rosborough essentially start from scratch. This past June, the shelter, which focuses on rehabilitating aging working horses and other animals, moved to Salem, New Jersey.

Volunteers also helped build a fence around the nearly 50-acre property.

“Wiring, electricity, water supply, everything we did,” Rosborough said. “I will never be able to express my gratitude to everyone who helped get us here.”

“She’s built a community of people coming together for a common cause, and that’s really a beautiful thing, really a cool thing,” said Bob Ranzer, who volunteers at least once a week.

For Giving Tuesday, Rosborough is raising money to build a pole barn equipped with a hospital stable for the horses.

“It will be really wonderful for the mission and allow us to continue to rescue these big old draft horses that need that extra care,” she said.

Happy Heart-Happy Home Farm & Rescue helps rehabilitate 50 horses. Rosborough said she was given a second chance and hopes to do the same for the animals.
