Perez must make his own decision about the future of Formula 1

DECEMBER 2, 2024

Red Bull officials have reiterated that Franco Colapinto is unlikely to join either of the energy drink company’s two Formula 1 teams in 2025.

Sergio Perez’s miserable form continued on Sunday in Qatar despite ever-increasing pressure as he dropped out of the race.

Team principal Christian Horner hinted that the Mexican driver may be weighing up his own future on the grid. He’s not enjoying the situation he’s in right now, said the boss of Red Bull Racing.

Whatever he does, it will be his decision. I think he is big enough and wise enough to come to his own conclusions.

Horner also caused a stir in the paddock late on Sunday when he told Spanish-language broadcaster DAZN: “There’s still one race left, let’s hope he does it positively.”

No one wants to retire like this.

There is no doubt that Red Bull has held talks with Williams-signed rookie Colapinto for 2025, but team advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has played down the prospect of a deal.

We have always led our drivers through the Red Bull program and so the question is: do we continue with it? And the shareholders have told me that it will go in this direction, he said.

Similarly, RB boss Laurent Mekies even downplayed the prospect of a place for Colapinto with the second Red Bull team next year. “The decision to keep the (Yuki) Tsunoda-(Liam) Lawson pairing is probably the most logical one for us.

Ultimately, the decision will come to Abu Dhabi. However, we will not negotiate with other drivers. What we have works perfectly.

If Lawson or Tsunoda replace Perez in 2025, Isack Hadjar is next in line for an RB slot, which Canal Plus in Qatar has told Qatar’s Canal Plus is ready for his Grand Prix debut.
