Pittsburgh Steelers’ first draft of the first round loses the mother hours after the selection

The day, which Commissioner Roger Goodell described as the latest member of the NFL, will always wear mixed feelings for Derrick Harmon.

According to several media reports, his mother Tiffany Saine died in a hospital in Michigan just a few hours after the selection of Pittsburgh Steelers with the 21st election in the NFL Draft 2025.

The Steelers later confirmed the news.

In a telephone interview with Pittsburgh Media from the Detroit suburb Farmington Hills, just a few minutes after the creation, the defensive Tackle from Oregon said that he wanted to visit his mother in the hospital and share the beautiful news.

“It was a bit bitter sweet. My mother was not with me, she is currently in the hospital in terms of life preservation,” said the 21-year-old, according to CNN partner WPXi.

“After I could make calls with you, I go straight to the hospital and tell her that her son was moved in,” added Harmon and seemed to be emotional.

Saine died shortly after this visit, according to Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writer Gerry Dulac.

“In the name of the entire organization of Pittsburgh Steelers, I expand Derrick Harmon and his family in this difficult time our deepest condolences,” said Team President Art Rooney II in a statement on Friday.

“Although we are happy to choose Derrick in the first round of the NFL design, our hearts are difficult when we mourn the death of his mother Tiffany Saine. We will support Derrick and his family, but we can navigate this time of mourning.

While Harmon’s first semester in the state of Michigan had a stroke that paralyzes her on the left side of her body, Harmon Espn said in an interview before the draft.

Previously, she was subjected to numerous brain operations during his childhood, said Harmon.

When Harmon continued to develop as a football player, the Detroit -born from Detroit decided near home and played for three years for the Spartans of the state of Michigan.

Saine, who described Harmon as “rock”, was instrumental in encouraging her son to take the 2,000-mile trip through the country to pursue his football dreams at the University of Oregon.

“We had a discussion and she told me every decision that I had made for her up to this point and it is time to make a decision for myself,” Harmon told ESPN.

Although he was on the other side of the country, Saine for Harmon stayed in the foreground. Before Oregon’s appearance in the Rose Bowl last season, Harmon stated that his greatest purchase with his zero money bought a van for his mother and wheelchair.

In the design, Harmon approached his mother for his success.

“It is the reason why I’m here,” said Harmon to Espn. “She is the one who has done everything so that I get to this point. I love you, mom. Everything I do is for you. I’m grateful forever.”

In his one-year year with Oregon, Harmon started all 14 games for the ducks and was a consensus-all-American consensus-all-American.

Harmon led all FBS brain defenders with 55 overall printing in 2024, while 10.5 duels for loss, 5 sacks and 45 tackles pay a total. Harmon also forced two fiddles and had two fiddles.

“He has Steeler DNA,” said Pittsburgh head coach Mike Tomlin on Thursday evening after Harmon’s design.
