Pittsfield woman killed in car crash on Thanksgiving evening | Break

CANAAN, N.Y. — A Pittsfield woman died in a car crash on Route 295 on Thanksgiving evening, state police said.

Sierra Tassone, 20, was a rear passenger in the car that crashed around 5:50 p.m. Thursday. According to State Police spokesman Aaron Hicks, the car was traveling westbound near the intersection of Stony Kill Road.

The driver of the car, Shawn A. Barnwell, 25, of the Bronx, lost control while driving in slippery conditions caused by a mix of rain and snow.

Hicks said Barnwell overcorrected and went off track. The car overturned and crashed into a power pole.

Hicks said Tassone was thrown from the car. When first responders arrived at the scene, they rendered aid and then transported Tassone to Berkshire Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead.

A third person, Sarah M. Kucka, 27, of Adams, falsely reported to authorities that she was driving the car at the time of the accident. Hicks said she filed this claim because Barnwell’s driver’s license was revoked.

Police arrested and charged Kucka with one count of obstructing governmental administration, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in prison, and one count of sixth-degree conspiracy, another misdemeanor punishable by up to three years in prison months will be punished.

Her first court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 12 in Canaan Town Court. Barnwell received traffic tickets.

Hicks said police are still investigating the accident.
