Nonetheless, 32-year-old Liren used all his experience to fight for a draw, while 18-year-old Gukesh couldn’t finish the game with some poor decisions towards the end.

The game ended with all pawns swapped and Gukesh down to one bishop, but Liren’s excellent defense helped him stay on par at the 2024 FIDE World Chess Championship. “It’s never pleasant to miss a winning position, but I’m happy that I outplayed my opponent pretty easily in the opening. I thought I should have won before and after the victorious sequel. I missed some moves,” Gukesh said after the game.
