Pleasant Valley has an almost new roster for the upcoming season

BRODHEADSVILLE – Pleasant Valley was one of two boys basketball programs at the Mountain to graduate the majority of its roster from last season. This includes a new group of players that head coach Bobby Hahn can rely on, as well as a changed squad structure.

“We have always had a very strong team, and this year we will be even stronger going forward,” said Hahn. “So we’re adjusting a lot of the things we did on offense to kind of get the ball to the forwards and put them in more positions instead of the guards controlling the ball.”

The good news for Hahn is that he has Zach Prator back for another year. Prator is an all-area big man who plays a fundamentally solid game with his back to the basket. The Bears’ senior captain also has a chance to reach 1,000 points before the end of his career, although he will need to average more than 20 points per game to do so.

Still, achieving this feat is possible knowing that Pleasant Valley needs a good performance from him to be successful.

“Part of you always wants our best player to get the ball as often as possible. Prator is not only a great player but also a great boy; he works hard and he’s a team leader,” Hahn said. “It’s not the easiest chance, but we want to try to give him the opportunity to put the ball in his hands and then play other players off it.”

“Once he gets a double, he does a really good job of distributing it. We hope that’s the focus of the offense.”

Prator says he’ll approach his 1,000 points “game by game” rather than worrying about it too much.

Additionally, Prator and Jereal Moore are tasked with getting the new varsity players up to speed, which Prator was impressed with.

“The newer guys definitely need to go the extra mile, and they have,” Prator said. “They have shown in practice that they can handle the speed and power at the varsity level, and hopefully they can fill the spots that are still open.”

Another challenge with a team with high turnover is maintaining the culture in the upcoming season. The talent may be there, but what will the mentality and approach be?

“All the seniors we graduated were not only great players and great kids, but they were the ones who were at the center of the culture here, even when they were freshmen, sophomores or juniors,” Hahn said. “With this crew here, we’ll see what mark the last group left behind and whether the new group follows in their footsteps.”
