RAF Typhoon Jets Intercept Russian aircraft near the NATO airroom in Poland

Two Russian aircraft flying near the NATO airspace were found by British fighter planes in separate incidents at the beginning of this week, according to the British Ministry of Defense.

A few RAF-Taifune was beaten up on April 15 to intercept a Russian Ilyushin Il-20m “Coot-A” secret service aircraft over the Baltic Sea, while two other types of typhoons collapsed an unknown plane on April 17.

The two sections, which started in Poland from the Malbork Air Base, were part of the UK’s contribution to NATO’s improved air -polarity.

They were the first sections of the RAF since airplanes arrived in the region to start defending the eastern flank of NATO next to Sweden.

The participation of the British NATO in the extended air police of NATO is called Operation Chessman and sees staff from all over the RAF alongside Sweden, the latest member of NATO, to Malbork.

The company follows the commitment of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starrer to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP.

The Minister for the Armed Forces Luke Pollard said that Great Britain was “unshakable” in his commitment to NATO.

“With the increase in Russian aggression and the security threats, we appear to calm our allies, to prevent opponents and to protect our national security through our change plan,” he said.

Mr. Pollard added that the “Mission shows our ability to work in addition to the latest member of NATO and to defend the alliance airspace, wherever and whenever it is necessary to protect us at home and abroad”.

This is not the first time that Raf -Jets intercept Russian aircraft.

Last year, two typhoons that were located in Raf Losssiemouth in Scotland were beaten up after a Russian Bären-F-Bomber had flown across the North Sea.

At that time, the Mod said that the Russian reconnaissance aircraft was found in the “Interest area” of Great Britain, but was not able to enter the British sovereign airspace.

Fifty Russian planes were also intercepted by RAF pilots in Losssiemouth in 2023 when 21 aircraft were intercepted within 21 days.

In a separate incident in 2023, Taifun fighters and a Norwegian F-35A fighter plane were launched to a Russian aircraft near British airspace as part of NATO’s reaction.

Incidents like this – referred to as quick reaction warnings – are not unusual and include RAF crew, the Russian military aircraft near British airspace and, if necessary, shade during the operations. They have occurred since the era of the Cold War.

However, sections are not only used to persecute Russian aircraft. In October 2024, RAF fighters were tried to intercept a civil airline that had reported a bomb on board.

A RAF spokesman then said that the alarm was ended without incident and the Boeing 777-300 “was released to continue at its original goal”.
