Light rain will begin early Thursday, followed by a storm from the Arctic. For current information, see the video forecast. Temperatures will drop on Thursday. Rain showers spread after dark, and you’ll hardly notice it’s raining unless you look outside. The rain will stop early Thursday morning before the commute, with most of central Alabama receiving just a fraction of an inch of rain. Cold, dry air from the Arctic will rush into Alabama on Thursday for the final time this week, but the front will move slowly across the entire state. This means we expect temperatures in Birmingham to fall from a morning high of around 50 degrees to 30 to 40 degrees by the afternoon. To the north, it will be 30 to 40 degrees most of the day in Cullman, Decatur, Huntsville and Albertville. To the south, Clanton, Alexander City and Demopolis could reach 60 degrees before the front gets there. COLD ON FRIDAY Friday will be the coldest morning of the week. Morning lows will be in the teens and 20s. This means a hard freeze is likely in some communities. Make sure you follow cold weather precautions. The temperature on the thermometer alone isn’t the whole story on Friday morning. There will also be northerly winds increasing the chill factor. The felt temperature could be as low as 10-15 degrees at times on Friday morning. This is cold enough to trigger a cold weather warning and we will be watching for the warning to be issued in the coming days. On Friday afternoon it will warm up to 40 degrees with mostly sunny skies. WEEKEND WEATHER Saturday will be dry. The morning will start with a frost, but the afternoon will warm up to 50 degrees with partly cloudy skies. Sunday morning will be milder with lows in the upper 30s. Clouds are to be expected during the day, but there may be light showers after dark. On Sunday the maximum temperatures will reach almost 60 degrees. NEXT WEEK WEATHERA rain pattern will begin early next week and heavy soaking will become increasingly likely across central Alabama between Monday, Tuesday and possibly Wednesday. At this time, instability appears to be limited, but we cannot turn our backs on the possibility of some stronger storms developing to the south. It’s just something to watch; Plan on a wet Monday and milder temperatures to start the week.
