Report: Central Michigan is pursuing Army OL coach Matt Drinkall as head coach

Central Michigan has a reported target for a head coach search.

By Matt Zenitz, army Matt Drinkall, their offensive line coach, is now a candidate for the Chippewa job.

“Central Michigan is eyeing Army offensive line coach Matt Drinkall as head coach, sources tell @CBSSports/@247Sports,” Zenitz tweeted Sunday night.

Drinkall served in various roles on the Black Knights team during his six seasons at West Point. He currently coaches their offensive line but has also worked as an assistant offensive coordinator and tight ends coach.

Since 2019, Army under Jeff Monken is 46-28 (.623) overall. This current season is the best of his decade-long tenure there, with an overall record of 11-1 in his first season in the U.S., including winning the AAC Championship on Friday. Drinkall also has five years of coaching experience as the head coach and offensive coordinator at Kansas Wesleyan University, offensive coordinator at St. Ambrose University and defensive backs and wide receivers coach at Bettendorf High School. He was once a student assistant at Iowaalso his alma mater.

This comes after Jim McElwain retired at the end of this season and the report was released two and a half weeks ago. That decision ended a six-year run at Mount Pleasant, where he was 33-36 (.448) overall, including 4-8 in 2024. He spent the other half of his career as a college head coach at Colorado State And Florida where he compiled an overall record of 77-64 (.546).
