NEW CITY – A New City man and his girlfriend were convicted Tuesday in Rockland County Court of murdering the man’s grandfather.

Constantinos Doonan, 32, also known as “Dino,” and Jo-Ann Haughey, 29, were found guilty of killing 85-year-old Constantinos Mastakouris of New City between Jan. 29 and Jan. 30, 2023. Doonan was the victim’s grandson.

District Attorney Thomas Walsh II called the crimes “heinous.”

“Nothing can be more valuable to us than our family members. And today the Crown Prosecution Service stood up for the victims, the elderly and the abused, calling for a 20-year life sentence for Mr Doonan. The co-defendant, Miss Haughey, was sentenced to 15 years for manslaughter,” he said.

Walsh said the grandfather’s murder was “evil and an unimaginable act.”

It was alleged the couple strangled and strangled Mastakouris, wrapped his body in a tablecloth, a kiddie pool and a shower curtain, then placed him in a crawl space in the basement of the victim’s home at 45 Ruth Drive.

Doonan and Haughey then stole his belongings, including his car, jewelry and credit card.
