He told a press conference before the game: “I understand, but I’m not naive. I don’t want to believe that we need many years to be competitive. I can’t think that I can’t do it, it is not in me. So I’m looking for pressure on myself.

“Our goal is next year. I don’t say that we will win the title next year, I’m not crazy.

“I can’t manage to say something in three years, we will still try something. We will start for me next season. We have to be so much better because this is a massive club and I would like to put this pressure on me and everyone here.”

When asked whether he had recovered since then, Amorim replied: “I focus more on our problems. We have bigger problems than you City.

“You may have the best coach in the world, you have top players, so it will be a difficult game. But I concentrate on improving our team so that I don’t concentrate on the improvements of Man City.”
