Ryan Poles revealed the main reasons he fired Matt Eberflus

Last week, the Chicago Bears fired their head coach for the fifth time since January 2012, firing Matt Eberflus after less than three seasons as coach. The decision came on Black Friday after an extensive meeting between GM Ryan Poles, team president Kevin Warren and chairman George McCaskey. It was the first time the bears had done this in over a century. However, the Poles did not regret the decision. He made that clear in the press conference on Monday.

Even though the GM didn’t seem happy to be there, he still answered questions about what happened. From his answers, it appears that the decision to fire Eberflus came from two directions. First and most obvious was the former coach’s inability to make decisions at the end of the game, constantly losing the team’s chances of winning. The other was the growing fear that the locker room would crack beyond repair. It had become clear that Eberflus could no longer command it.

Ryan Poles knew he couldn’t let it continue.

The organization had tried to give Eberflus the benefit of the doubt. He had freed himself from the death spirals before. Last season was a perfect example, starting 0-4 and then finishing 7-6. Despite some concerns about giving him a chance to oversee Caleb Williams’ early development, the Bears opted to keep the status quo. However, after the loss to New England, it became clear that Ryan Poles risked that the team would implode if the main problem was not addressed. The McCaskeys resisted for another three weeks until the Detroit fiasco on national television forced them to act. Eberflus was outside. Thomas Brown is there for now. The Poles now have to figure out how to repair what is broken.
