Sandro Tonali examines again on illegal gambling

The midfielder of Newcastle United, Sandro Tonali, was described as part of an investigation by the Italian prosecutors in illegal gambling – but the association has no concerns about the threat of new sports rankings.

The Italian news agencies Ansa and Agi reported that Tonali and his Italy colleague Nicolò Fagioli, who plays for Fiorentina, belong to a dozen series that are suspected of using illegal betting platforms, even though they are not bet on football.

Newcastle is said to have ensured that the examination refers to the original case that has led to Tonali being banned from football for ten months and that it is not exposed to any further sanctions.

Roma midfielder Leandro Paredes and the Argentine wing player Ángel di María, who played for Juventus during the 2022-23 The season is among the other footballers who were named as a suspect by news agencies in an investigation by the prosecutors in Milan.

A number of players at Juventus – Weston McKennie, Mattia Perin, Raoul Bellanova and Samuele Ricci – are also among those that are mentioned as examined for poker games and bet at sporting events on the illegal gaming platforms. They could be fined if the fees were detected.

In a statement, the Milan public prosecutor announced that under house arrest “because of illegal gaming activities and money laundering”, five people who organized and managed the secret platforms by a jewelry shop in the city were accommodated.

The footballers are not among those arrested and if they are found guilty, according to the agencies, they would only be exposed to a small punishment, most likely a fine, from the criminal proceedings, even though they are exposed to sanctions by the Italian Football Association (FIGC).

Tonali was banned in October 2023 for ten months because he had relied on football games, including those in which his old team AC Milan was involved while playing for her.

Both Tonali and Fagioli said they were addicted to gambling and were looking for treatment.
