SCHS column: Residents of long-term housing seek a forever home | Community

Another week at the shelter brings with it a plethora of pets with playful and loving personalities, some new and others who have been at the shelter for over 100 days.

This week as part of the Stephens County Humane Society’s Take Out Tuesday program, we met a few dogs who love to run, play and put a smile on their faces – Ruger, Bob Ross, Sequoia and Charlie.

Charlie, who has been at the shelter for 113 days, is about 1 year and 3 months old and is an English pointer mix. Charlie weighs about 48 pounds and is full of happiness. This sweet puppy will attract everyone’s attention even without a trampoline underneath him. As a high jumper, Charlie jumps as high as a Tigger to turn a frown upside down. Charlie would make an excellent farm dog with plenty of room to run around as he loves to play, be it with toys or with people.

Ruger is about 1 year and four months old and is a mixed breed. This handsome boy will bring a smile to everyone who meets him. With a love for all toys, Ruger will chase a ball or tug on a rope and be perfectly happy with either. He weighs about 49 pounds and is very eager to please you. Ruger walks well on a leash and proves he is an all-around good dog.

Bob Ross is about 4 years old and is a German Shepherd, an Anatolian mix. He weighs about 65 pounds and loves to hug. This sweet boy is a gentle giant and loves with all his heart.

According to the Humanitarian Society, Bob Ross is usually quiet, but when a new face enters his room, he can be very expressive and enthusiastic about playing. One thing about Bob Ross: He’s definitely a big hugger.

Sequoia is about a year and a half old and is a playful husky who loves toys. She weighs about 48 pounds and her eyes light up for attention. This sweet girl has a warm personality but is also excited and loves to jump. With a little patience she will eventually calm down and listen.

Additionally, SCHS will host Pet and Family Photos with Santa at Tractor Supply Co. in Duncan on Sunday, Dec. 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. Community members can join in the fun by simply showing up and showing their support for the humane society.

The cost for pet and family photos with Santa is $10 at Debbie Duggar Visuals. All proceeds benefit the Stephens County Humane Society.

Tractor Supply Co. is located at 1520 W. Plato Rd., Duncan.

For the cats

As fall comes to an end and winter prepares to arrive next month, we wanted to share some ways to keep your feline friends cozy in the cold weather.

Make sure your indoor cats have a warm and comfortable place to sleep. Heated cat beds or soft blankets can always make a big difference when it comes to keeping a cat warm on cold days and nights.

For outdoor cats, be sure to provide a sheltered area where they can protect themselves from the cold.

As always, take care of the Christmas decorations, eat a healthy diet, make sure your cats stay hydrated, and get checked by your local veterinarian.

To inquire about any of the dogs or cats or to make an appointment, call 580-252-7387 between Humane Society hours of noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and noon to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday. The SCHS is open for adoptions only on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and closed on Mondays for surgery days.
