Scott Martin: Alabama is transitioning from meteorological fall to meteorological winter – and it’s going to feel like it

COLD SATURDAY MORNING: After waking up to a widespread freeze this morning – lows will be in the lower 20s to upper 20s in north and central Alabama and in the upper 20s to mid 30s in southern Alabama – today’s highs will be in the upper 40s across the Northeast peaking into the upper 50s with mostly sunny skies and winds from the northwest.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: I heard about a big game down in Tuscaloosa where some Tigers in orange and blue are trying to ruin the playoffs chance for the home team wearing the crimson jerseys. That’s right, the Iron Bowl is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. at Saban Field in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Temperatures will be in the low 50s at the opening whistle and will drop to the low 40s by the final whistle. The wind will be light and the sky will be sunny.

SUNDAY: Don’t expect any major weather changes for the first day of December and the first meteorological day of winter on Sunday. We’re in for another day of mostly sunny skies and temperatures slowly warming into the lower 50s to lower 60s.

THE WORKING WEEK: Another blast of cold air will enter the state on Monday, causing temperatures to drop even further than they did on Black Friday. Afternoon highs will range from the lower 40s north to the mid to upper 50s south. The big story is that overnight lows are expected to fall into the upper 10s to lower 30s as the sun rises Tuesday morning.

Tuesday’s highs will be slightly cooler in some locations than Monday, particularly in southern Alabama. We continue the dry spell with highs in the low 40s to mid 50s.

Winds will be stronger from the west and west-northwest on Wednesday at 500 millibars, allowing temperatures to begin to rise. We are also seeing a fault beginning to form to the west and southwest. A surface high over the Gulf Coast of western Florida will help send this disturbance our way, but it won’t arrive here until Thursday. Cloud cover will increase throughout the day and high temperatures will be in the upper 40s to mid 60s.

Scattered showers are possible across the state on Thursday, with a higher chance in central and southern Alabama. However, forecast rainfall amounts look paltry at best at this point. Highs will be in the mid 50s to upper 60s.

Friday’s chance of rain will spread across the state, but it’s not a guarantee that everyone will see rain. If you do this, don’t expect the total to be too high. Highs will be in the low 50s to low 70s.

TROPICS: Today is the last day of the Atlantic hurricane season and we are quietly wrapping up the season. The Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea are calm and new systems are not expected to develop within the next seven days. Unless a rogue system develops outside of the season, the next tropical update will be released on June 1, 2025.
