The Women’s Basketball team at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay will play for the second time in a row in the NCAA tournament when it faces Alabama at the XFinity Center in College Park on Saturday.

The No. 12 Seed Phoenix (29-5) was listed as a 13½-point outer outsider one day before his game against No. 5 Crimson Tide (23-8), but UWGB was in a similar situation 15 years ago.

In 2010 it received a seed No. 12 after the Horizon League’s only team of women had become in history that received a wide range, and No. 5 Virginia, 69-67, shocked.

If UWGB can do the same against Alabama, it would break a defeat against seven games in the big dance and give the Phoenix its first NCAA victory since Iowa State, 71-57.

The Phoenix is 6-19 in the tournament game and in 2011 reached Sweet 16 for the only time in program history.

“It is not new this year,” said Senior Guard-Forward, Maddy Schreiber, about a UWGB group that lost to Tennessee against Tennessee last season. “Last year we didn’t have the heads exactly. It was somehow brand new. This year we are more learned how it will be, and this experience will really help us push forward.”

When UWGB beats Alabama, it will probably play No. 4 Maryland on the home square of the Terrapins in the second round. Maryland is based on the UWGB Alabama showdown No. 13 Norfolk State.
