Senate confirms Phelan as the next secretary of the navy

The Senate confirmed on Monday that John Phelan was the next secretary of the navy and only made him a seventh non-veteran to serve in the role in the past 70 years.

Phelan, founder of the private investment company Rugger Management LLC, was confirmed by a 62-30 voice, with almost all of his support from Republicans. It is expected that he will be sworn in the role of military leadership in the next few days.

Phelan was the first minister of service to be announced by Trump, the second to confirm. Last month, legislators Daniel Driscoll approved as a army secretary with a similar 66-28 partisan vote.

In his hearing on confirmation on February 27, Phelan said that he saw the marine as a service in desperate need for reform and innovation.

“The US navy is located on (A) CrossRoads with extended operations, inadequate maintenance, enormous cost overruns, late shipbuilding, failed audits, below -average living space and unfortunately the high suicide rates,” he told the members of the Senate Committee. “These are systemic failures that have not been taken into account for far too long. To be honest, this is unacceptable.”

He also argued that his lack of military experience was an enrichment for his role that the navy was leading because he rejected “traditional” military thinking.

“The Navy and the Marine Corps already have exceptional operational know -how in their ranks,” he said. “My job is to use and strengthen this know-how, to suspend the status quo and to take decisive measures with a result-oriented approach.”

At the beginning of this month, the former veteran of Virginia Senate and veteran of Navy Special Operations Hung Cao was nominated as a secretary of the navy, which gives Phelan a veteran with significant marine experience as a top representative.

The Senate Committee for the Senate Committee is expected to hold a hearing for the confirmation of Trump’s third service secretary Troy Mink, which was instructed to lead the Air Force.

The navy is currently in its top uniformed management position without civil servants. Head of the Naval Operations ADM. Lisa Franchetti, the first female chief of the navy, was rejected by Trump in a Pentagon leadership last month.
