U.S. Senator George Helmy (D-NJ) today announced his intention to resign from office on Sunday, December 8, to make way for Senator-elect Andy Kim. Helmy was sworn into the 118th Congress on September 9, having been appointed a U.S. Senator on August 16 by Governor Phil Murphy following the resignation of U.S. Senator Bob Menendez.

Since taking office, Senator Helmy has served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the Senate Finance Committee, and the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. introduced and co-sponsored over 30 bills, including five resolutions that passed the Senate chamber; maintained a perfect voting record, including confirming 20 judicial nominees to the federal bench; advocated for the mental health of young people and the provision of humanitarian assistance to Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon; successfully nominated 48 candidates from New Jersey to the four United States military academies; established a state office that expeditiously closed 117 constituent cases; and more.

“It is with deep gratitude and emotion that I announce my resignation as U.S. Senator for New Jersey. It has been the honor of my life to represent the people of New Jersey in the Senate, and I am forever grateful to Governor Murphy for entrusting me with this responsibility,” said Helmy. “When I look back on my 85 days in this office, I am proud of the work that my team and I were able to accomplish. From introducing and co-sponsoring multiple bills to support the mental health of young people in our country, to advocating for humanitarian assistance to civilians in the Middle East, to working with my fellow senators on both sides of the aisle to do great things for our constituents, I “I will look back on this time with great affection.”

“New Jersey voters made the right decision in November to elect Andy Kim as their U.S. Senator. Having known him for nearly a decade, I can attest to Senator Kim’s deep commitment, character and compassion to the people of New Jersey. I look forward to supporting Senator Kim as he continues his service to the people of New Jersey and our nation,” Helmy continued. “Andy and I have worked closely since his election to ensure a seamless transition, and I have made myself available at any time in the coming weeks to support this process. I look forward to seeing what he will accomplish in this elevated role.”

“Senator Helmy has advocated for New Jersey numerous times throughout his career, and we are grateful for his willingness to do so again in times of need,” said Senator-elect Andy Kim. “His term in the Senate was characterized by commitment and stability. He has served the people of New Jersey well and brought attention to critical issues such as the youth mental health crisis, an issue I want to continue to focus on. I thank Senator Helmy for his friendship and service.”

“George Helmy has dedicated his career to the people of New Jersey and his leadership has been nothing short of extraordinary. From his time as director of my state to his service as Governor Murphy’s chief of staff, he has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of the people we represent. His deep understanding of our state’s issues and proven track record made him an effective voice in the Senate. He has accomplished so much in a short period of time and his leadership has made us all proud. As he moves into this new chapter, I have no doubt that George will continue to have a profound impact on the people of New Jersey, and I am proud to have worked with him to serve our great state,” said Sen. Cory Booker.

“As he concludes his final week in the U.S. Senate, Senator Helmy would like to thank him for his commitment and service to the people of New Jersey,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “Over the past three months, Senator Helmy has worked at every level to address our nation’s youth mental health crisis, advance key federal funding priorities for our state, and provide robust citizen services. Following the official certification of the U.S. Senate election results on December 5 by the State Board of Canvassers and the resignation of Senator Helmy, I plan to provide Senator-elect Kim with as smooth a transition into office as possible by appointing him to the U.S. Senate professions.”

Senator-elect Andy Kim will be sworn into the U.S. Senate on Monday, December 9th.
