Now streaming: Shudder, Kicking Off December Horror

In our first weekly edition, we focus on Shudder. First, let’s make sure these three films are on your screen, either for the first time or because they’re just such great rides into horror that they’re worth watching again. All were added last Sunday, December 1st.

John Carpenter’s Village of the Damned (1995)

Even the director’s less acclaimed films have much to recommend them. Frankly, the original is superior, but Carpenter’s remake features a great cast, led by Christopher Reeve and Kirstie Alley as the doctors, and Michael Pare, Meredith Salenger and Mark Hamill in support. Carpenter keeps the narrative to the point and vibrant; It may be one of his smaller efforts, but it’s still pretty fun.

Dead Silence (1989)

Philip Noyce’s brisk direction, in which Sam Neill and young Nicole Kidman play a romantic couple on a boat, is fantastic. years before TitanicBilly Zane proved to be the scariest antagonist on the high seas.

Rare Exports: A Christmas Story

Our writer J Hurtado described it as “the kind of movie that grabs you by the shoulders, shakes you and says, ‘That’s what funny movies look like!'” And that was in 2011! My boss at Screen Anarchy, Todd Brown, called it “A Christmas Story for People Who Hate Christmas Stories.” I look forward to diving into this film and enjoying it again. I recommend you do the same.
