BRICK, NJ – Saturday, November 30th is a crucial day for local independent businesses in Brick. It’s Small Business Saturday, the start of Shop Small events that highlight the power of dollars spent in local communities.

Founded by American Express in 2010, Small Business Saturday falls between the major Black Friday shopping holiday, which tends to favor national brands, and Cyber ​​Monday, an online shopping event that takes place on December 2nd this year .

There are 979,085 small businesses in New Jersey, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2024 state profiles. These companies employ 1.7 million people nationwide.

According to the federal Small Business Administration, Ocean County has the highest percentage of small businesses, with nearly 75 percent of the county’s establishments falling into the definition of small business with fewer than 500 employees, according to the SBA.

Local businesses rely on increased sales in the final months of the year to meet their sales goals, and you’ll find plenty of celebration and holiday events in stores to make the shopping experience fun.

According to the American Independent Business Alliance, locally owned businesses pass on a far greater percentage of their sales locally than remote businesses. Independents return about 48 percent of their revenue back into the local economy, compared to the 14 percent returned to the local economy by chains.

The federal government generally defines small businesses as companies with fewer than 500 employees.

They have been responsible for two out of three jobs over the last 25 years. Even a partial collapse of small businesses could weaken the entire U.S. economy, the Labor Department said.
