SNAP recipients in Oregon will be given an extended period of time to request replacement food following the storm

BEAVERTON Ore. (KPTV) – SNAP recipients in 22 Oregon counties now have an extended deadline to apply for food replacement following a recent storm, according to the Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS).

People living in these 22 counties who lost food purchased through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) due to the Nov. 19-20 storm have 30 days to apply for replacement benefits from ODHS.

The 22 eligible counties are:

  • Benton
  • Clackamas
  • Clatsop
  • Coo
  • Deschutet
  • Douglas
  • Jackson
  • Jefferson
  • Josephine
  • Klamath
  • lake
  • roadway
  • Lincoln
  • Linn
  • Mishap
  • Marion
  • Multnomah
  • Polk
  • Tillamook
  • Umatilla
  • Washington
  • Yamhill

Households have until December 18 to apply for food replacement benefits.

ODHS received federal approval to waive the standard 10-day application period for replacement benefits to assist people affected by the strong winds and heavy rains that caused power outages in over 25,000 homes.

Households that do not reside in one of the counties listed above must follow standard procedure and request replacement food items within ten days of the loss.

Anyone who threw away food purchased through SNAP that was destroyed by the storm can apply for reimbursement for the cost of the lost food.

Individuals applying for replacement funds should be prepared to pay the full cost of the lost food and may be required to provide proof that the food was destroyed if they do not live in one of the counties listed above.

Once approved, the replacement benefits will be added to the household’s existing Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card. The maximum replacement amount is equal to the cost of the lost food but does not exceed the household’s monthly SNAP benefits.
