Snow for Thanksgiving? | WSYR

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — After our first major winter storm of the season across parts of the region, all eyes are on another possible storm for Thanksgiving.

Before the holidays it was restless at times

A low pressure area and frontal system will move through Central New York Monday night into Tuesday.

This will initially bring widespread rain to the area starting Tuesday, followed by a few isolated showers Tuesday and then some lake rain and snow east of Lake Ontario Tuesday night into Wednesday. Luckily, most areas in CNY and Upstate NY are quiet on the big travel day.

A westerly wind driving this lake response will likely produce at least 1 to 4 inches of snowfall east of Lake Ontario at elevations such as the Tug Hill Plateau and over the northwest Adirondacks.

What about Thanksgiving Day?

A few more lake showers east of Lake Ontario on Wednesday evening will give way to another storm system moving in from the southwest on Thursday.

There is still much uncertainty surrounding the exact track of this storm – particularly how far north it moves – as models still disagree on the potential for widespread precipitation, rain, areas of wintry mixing and accumulation could include snow.

This could have a significant impact on Thanksgiving travel in Central New York and the Northeast.

Lake effect snow is expected through next weekend

Regardless of the exact route of the Thanksgiving storm, cold air will move in behind it, with high temperatures not reaching the 30s until Friday and into next weekend. This cold air moving over the relatively warmer waters of Lake Ontario is expected to result in a prolonged period of lake-effect snow in parts of the area.
