Some positives after OT loss in Toronto – NBC Sports Philadelphia

Given the circumstances, the Flyers should be feeling pretty good after suffering a 3-2 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs on Sunday night at Scotiabank Arena.

Ivan Fedotov gave them a solid performance at the net and they troubled a talented team until the end.

Morgan Rielly scored the winning goal for Toronto off a pass from Auston Matthews.

Tyson Foerster and Scott Laughton scored the Flyers’ goals. Rasmus Ristolainen finished the game with two assists.

The Flyers’ power play, which had produced a goal in consecutive games, ended 0 for 3. On one occasion in the third period it came up empty and the game was tied 2-2.

John Tortorella’s club finished 2-2-1 in five games during the holiday break.

The Flyers (17-18-5) faced OT for the 13th time this season. They fell to 8-5 in regulation time and 9-3-5 in games decided by one goal.

The Flyers are 1-7-2 (26-13-12) in their last 10 games with the Maple Leafs. The first of three meetings between the clubs this season took place on Sunday evening.

• Fedotov saw his first game action since December 5 and his first complete game since Black Friday.

The 6-foot-7 goaltender gave the Flyers a good chance to win. He stopped 22 of 25 shots.

Matthew Knies and Oliver Ekman-Larsson gave the Flyers a 1-2 deficit at the first break. Knies grabbed a rebound after a Ryan Poehling turnover kept Toronto in the offensive zone. Ekman-Larsson’s goal also came from a rebound.

Samuel Ersson was sidelined for the second consecutive game with a lower-body injury. The Flyers’ No. 1 goaltender has missed a total of 15 games due to lower-body issues.

Maple Leafs goalkeeper Dennis Hildeby, also 1.90 meters tall, stopped 30 of the Flyers’ 32 shots.

The Flyers Postgame Live team broke down the team’s 3-2 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs.

• One good development for the Flyers on their trip was improved goal prevention.

They allowed 2.80 goals per game in the five games. Their losses came to the Golden Knights, Kings and Maple Leafs, currently three top-10 clubs.

This season, the Flyers are conceding the third-most goals per game in the NHL at 3.55.

• The Flyers scored their first goal just 3:24 into Sunday night as Foerster and Noah Cates continued their upward trend.

Foerster scored his sixth goal in the last eight games. Cates picked up his 11th point (six goals, five assists) in the last 12 games with a helper.

After playing a team-low 10 minutes in the Flyers’ 5-2 loss to Las Vegas on Thursday night, Couturier made a good play, assisting Laughton on the game-winning goal, 2-2. The 32-year-old captain played 13:41 minutes against Toronto.

• Garnet Hathaway and Jake McCabe dropped the gloves at the end of the first period.

Hathaway appeared to accidentally land on McCabe, who was slow to get up and did not return to the game.

• The Flyers return home for a rematch against the Maple Leafs on Tuesday (7:30 p.m. ET/ESPN+, Hulu).
