South Alabama defeats Alcorn State in overtime

MOBILE, Ala. – Alcorn State gave South Alabama everything it could, but it ran out of gas and lost a men’s basketball game 74-65 to the Jaguars in overtime on Friday.

Corey Myles led South Alabama (5-3) with 25 points and Barry Dunning Jr. scored 14. Each player scored four points in overtime.

Keionte Cornelis made eight 3-pointers and led Alcorn State (0-6) with 24 points. Jalyke Gaines-Wyatt scored 15 points and Omari Hamilton had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Former Vicksburg High star Davian Williams had three points, four assists, two steals and two rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench for the Braves.

Alcorn led 55-47 after two free throws from Gaines-Wyatt with 5:37 left. South Alabama came back and tied it at 61 on a layup by Elijah Ormiston with 33 seconds left.

Alcorn had a chance to win it, but Gaines-Wyatt missed a 3-pointer with eight seconds left. Ormiston then started overtime with a layup and South Alabama didn’t trail again.

Alcorn was 0-for-9 overall from the field and 0-for-6 from 3-point range in overtime. All points were scored through free throws. South Alabama was 7 of 8 at the foul line in overtime.

Alcorn lost its sixth straight game against a discouraging schedule of away games to start the season. It will play next week at Maryland (December 1), Wichita State (December 4) and Oklahoma (December 7) and will not play a home game until its SWAC opener against Jackson State on Jan. 4.
