South Oak Cliff gets a rematch in the state finals

Here are five thoughts on this week’s regional semifinal:

South Oak Cliff plays Port Neches-Groves in the Class 5A Division II Region II final next week. It will be a rematch of the last two state championship games, with South Oak Cliff winning 34-24 in 2022 and Port Neches-Groves getting revenge with a 20-17 win last year.

South Oak Cliff (11-2) is trying to win its third state title in four years and has won 11 straight after starting the season with two straight losses to Galena Park North Shore and Duncanville, the teams that played has been in the last three Class 6A Division I state title games. South Oak Cliff has won its three playoff games by a combined score of 125-28 after beating Marshall 35-7 on Friday as Mikail Trotter Ran for 118 yards and two touchdowns and SOC accumulated 264 rushing yards as a team.

A blocked field goal attempt with 1:28 left allowed Port Neches-Groves to hold on and beat Texarkana Texas High 31-28 on Friday in a game played in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Port Neches-Groves (12-1) trailed by nine at halftime and now has had five games decided by six points or less this year, going 4-1 in those contests.

Cornelius Warren and North Crowley overwhelm Coppell in the 2nd half to advance to the regional final

Entering Saturday, Duncanville hadn’t needed big games from five-star recruits Keelon Russell and Dakorien Moore, winning its last four games by an average of 42.5 points. Russell, an Alabama pledge and the second-best quarterback recruit in the country, averaged just 13 passes in those four wins and had just four completions and eight pass attempts in last week’s 56-14 win over Rockwall.

Moore, an Oregon product who is the top-rated wide receiver in the country, didn’t have a catch against Rockwall and totaled four catches for 87 yards and a touchdown in a 50-6 win over Mesquite and a 48-6 blowout win against Cedar Hill. But both superstars were needed in the Class 6A Division I Region II semifinal against The Woodlands, and both delivered great performances as Duncanville continued its quest for a third straight state title.

Russell was near perfect, completing 22 of 26 passes for 440 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 20 yards per completion in Duncanville’s 42-20 win. Moore had 12 catches for 226 yards and four touchdowns, helping the third-ranked team in the country improve to 12-0 this season and 41-1 over the last three years.

The Woodlands got within 28-20 early in the fourth quarter, but Russell threw touchdown passes of 62 and 11 yards to Moore to tie the game. Russell has thrown for 3,645 yards and 51 touchdowns this season and Moore has 64 catches for 1,258 yards and 18 touchdowns as Duncanville faces Cypress Bridgeland in the regional final next Saturday at Waco Midway’s Panther Stadium at 2 p.m.

Allen falls to Euless Trinity and continues its undefeated season in the regional finals

Eight-time state champion Southlake Carroll lost its two star running backs — USC commit Riley Wormley and Baylor commit Davis Penn — to season-ending knee injuries. But Carroll still had 190 rushing yards in Friday’s 42-37 Class 6A Division II Region I semifinal win over Hebron, reaching its eighth straight regional final.

Christian Glenn, who started the season at wide receiver, moved to running back and rushed for 87 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while quarterback Angelo Renda ran for 103 yards and three scores, bringing Carroll within three wins of its first state championship since 2011 . Glenn is the son of former Cowboys wide receiver Terry Glenn, a Pro Bowler and Super Bowl champion who died in a car accident in 2017.

Carroll is 3-4 in regional finals since 2017, with its deepest playoff runs during that span being a state runner-up finish in 2020 and state semifinal appearances in 2021 and 2023. Carroll (13-0) will next face Denton Guyer (10). -3) next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at DATCU Stadium in Denton. Guyer defeated Carroll 45-21 in a regional final in 2022.

Lovejoy’s high-powered offense is led by Daylan McCutcheon, a four-star prospect from Texas who was ranked as the 13th-best wide receiver in the country in the Class of 2025. But on Friday, Lovejoy showed it has plenty of other stars when it defeated district rival Anna 52-49 on Cooper Ryan’s 31-yard field goal with 39 seconds left.

McCutcheon, who has 17 touchdown catches and nearly 1,000 receiving yards this season, had just two catches for 10 yards against an Anna team that was 4A Division I state champions last year before moving to 5A in realignment Division II promotion. But Ben Adams ran for 160 yards and two touchdowns, quarterback Jacob Janecek accounted for four touchdowns and had 104 rushing yards, and Zane Kuzenski caught four passes for 70 yards and a score, so Lovejoy prevailed despite being 575-387 was exceeded.

Lovejoy (10-3) will face Argyle (12-1) – winner of 12 straight games – in the 5A Division II Region I final next Friday at 7 p.m. at Children’s Health Stadium in Prosper. Legendary coach Todd Dodge, the Having won seven state titles at Southlake Carroll and Austin Westlake in his first season at Lovejoy, he needs two more state titles to break the state record set by Carthage’s Scott Surratt and the late Gordon Wood.

Deep playoff runs are nothing new for Lovejoy. As a 3A school, it reached the state semifinals in 2009 and played in regional finals in 2010, 2020, 2021 and 2023.

District rivals Denton Ryan and Aledo meet in the Class 5A Division I Region I final next Saturday at 2 p.m. at Crowley ISD Multi-Purpose Stadium as Aledo (12-1) continues its quest for its 13th state title. They had already met once this season, and Ryan was ranked No. 1 in the state at the time and nearly ended Aledo’s winning streak as the district record holder in the state.

Aledo scored 34 unanswered points after trailing 27-8 in the second quarter and beat Denton Ryan 42-27 while extending its district winning streak to 123 games. Four-star junior running back Raycine Guillory Jr. ran for 157 yards and scored three touchdowns, adding 111 yards in the second half.

Aledo is trying to win its third straight state title and its sixth championship in seven years, and it’s going for its third different state title by three goals. Denton Ryan, a three-time state champion, last won the state title in 2020.
