Steelers explores all options to round off QB room

Palm Beach, Florida – The Pittsburgh Steelers don’t get from the quarterback carousel so soon. In the middle of a public advertising from Quarterback Aaron Rodgers, coach Mike Tomlin said on Sunday that the team will examine its options to expand the quarterback room.

“We still evaluate the takeover of a man in the position, be it free agency and/or the draft, and so we carry out our Due Diligence with a few free agents. Also prepared for the draft,” Tomlin from the annual league meeting of the NFL said in his first public comments since a press conference of the season in January.

“We are optimistic about the space we build. Obviously we are excited to have Mason Rudolph back.

“But we will surely continue to examine all of our options to round off this room.”

Tomlin was shy about the special features of the Steelers after the 41-year-old Rodgers, who visited the team facility for almost six hours on March 21.

“It was reported that he spent a day with us and it was a really good day,” said Tomlin. “In particular, he and I have obviously for some time now, and so it was really good to spend some time together, to learn man, but it is a free agency. It is a process. I have nothing more important to add something else.”

Tomlin said that there is no internal Steelers period to solve the situation with Rodgers.

“Not as far as I know,” he said. “I do not know that we approached it from the point of view of the deadline. As I have already mentioned, you would certainly like to have populated the circumstances, but the deadlines do not bring it into the head often.”

Steeler’s coach added that he did not ask Rodgers about his timeline during his visit.

“I really wanted to spend more time getting to know him and things he appreciates as a player and man and what he could look for with his next stop,” he said.

When asked about a potential plan B, if Rodgers decides to go somewhere else or retire, Tomlin said that the team did not necessarily identify a preference.

“I don’t know if we identify something as Plan A, Plan B or Plan C,” he said. “We just look at the area of the available people, be it free agency or design, to make decisions and to collect information accordingly.”

Tomlin also said that he hadn’t thought much about setting Rodgers’ situation before the draft and that the unresolved quarterback position did not hinder the plans of the team’s free agency. The Steelers exchanged the eve of the negotiation time against the Wide Receiver DK Metcalf and signed the Cornerback from Free Agent, Darius Slay Jr. and Kenneth Gainwell returned.

Although the Steelers do not set a deadline for the decision by Rodgers, Tomlin admitted that entering the training camp with an incomplete quarterback room could have a negative impact on the development of the teams.

“In spring it is about teaching and learning and familiarizing yourself with the players and ensuring that they are familiar with some of the things we appreciate,” he said. “It is not a valuation time of the year for us. It is certainly not a time of the year in which we concentrate on preparing for the game campaign. The training camp would certainly be a number of demarcations in relation to this discussion; spring about teaching and learning.”

The importance of playing down a complete quarterback position in spring is something of Tomlin’s words a year ago when he said it was important to bring Russell Wilson in “pole position” for the starting job about Justin Fields because of his experience and his veteran management.

“During this time when we do not officially work, men, I just think that it is advantageous,” said Tomlin at the 2024 session. “Only a synergy that I think is good for this time of year.”

Although the quarterback position is in the works, Tomlin admitted that Rudolph’s experience with the team and Pittsburgh’s view of him as a potential starter dazzu led to the Steelers signed him with a two-year deal.

“I think that’s why we prepared him again, man,” said Tomlin, asked if Rudolph “could be the type”. “We like Mason Rudolph, but that’s no secret.”
