Steve Spurrier doesn’t think the Alabama brand will punch its ticket to the College Football Playoff

Despite three defeats Alabama is still in the College Football Playoffs race. Some help will be needed from the committee and throughout championship weekend, but the Crimson Tide could be the last overall team. Certainly not what anyone expected after a massive defeat Oklahoma in week 13.

This specific loss makes some people think that Alabama shouldn’t come anywhere close to the GFP. If they participated, the committee would recognize the brand of the program and give it the benefit of the doubt. Not Steve Spurrieralthough.

“Some people say their brand will get them there,” Spurrier said. “I don’t think that will be the case.”

Seemingly every year, Alabama found a way to break into the four-team field. Last season was a huge leap in the undefeated history State of Florida after winning the SEC Championship vs. Georgia. Go back to the 2017 season where Nick SabanIn the end, Alabama’s team took the trophy, and Alabama didn’t even win the SEC West that year.

Alabama was involved in eight of the ten College Football Playoffs.

Back to the season: Two more SEC teams may be fighting for the final spot – Ole Miss And South Carolina. Spurrier has a dog in the running as the former head coach of the Gamecocks. He referenced Alabama’s loss to Oklahoma when comparing it to two of the losses South Carolina suffered this year.

“They lost to Oklahoma, which they defeated LSUsaid Spurrier. “And they’re 6-6, Oklahoma is a 6-6 team. South Carolina had two pretty heartbreaking losses to LSU and then the game against Alabama was a two point loss. Anyway.”

Of course, there’s a chance that none of these three SEC teams make the 12-team field. What the committee does with it Miami10-2 overall and fresh off a loss Syracusecould destroy any argument for Alabama, Ole Miss or South Carolina.

But Spurrier seems certain of one thing: If Alabama does end up in the CFP, it won’t be because of its brand and past successes.
