How I solved today’s strands

The puzzle topic could refer to a big meal like a “Sunday roast”, or it could refer to a comedy format in which people playfully (and mercilessly) mock a honored guest.

I scanne for a while and I don’t find anything, but then I see laughing at the right edge. 🔵 looks like we’re going to the comedy route.

Kichern is located in the upper left corner. 🔵

Kichern is located in the upper right corner. 🔵

Roar fits between giggles and laughter. 🔵

I think Spangram will probably be vertical today, but I can’t quite analyze these empty letters above.

Howl is in the lower right corner. 🔵

Oh, wait, I see it now: crackingup. 🟡

Gackel is along the left edge. 🔵

Finally they shout. 🔵

How to play strands

You will find the beach game on the New York Times website and in the Nyt Games app.

When you start playing, you will see a game board with a selection of letters that are flanked by a note that gives a reference to the topic of the board – this will be a sentence like “better with age”. Your task is to find the hidden words within the board that reflect the subject of the puzzle.

A crossword puzzle that was crossed with a search for a word

The most important word is the “Spangram”, a word that explicitly indicates the subject of the puzzle. (For example, the Spangram is fermented for the puzzle with the topic “Better with age”, the products describe that, as you suspect, are better with age.) The Spangram includes the entire game board, either from left to right or from top to bottom (hence the name). If you find the Spangram, it will be emphasized yellow. Loosening the Spangram makes the rest of the puzzle usually much easier to complete.

In strands, words can move any direction (upwards, left, right and diagonal), and you only use every letter once. There is only one correct solution. If you correctly identify one of the words of the puzzle (e.g. Kombucha, Miso or Kimchi), it is highlighted in blue.

If you have difficulty solving the puzzle, you can submit all of the non -subject words that you see (as long as it is four letters or more) in order to receive recognition for a single note. If you submit three non-topics, the “Note” button can be clicked. When you click on it, all letters in one of the themed words will be emphasized for you. You still have to link these highlighted letters in the correct order to form one of the themed words. If there is already a hint on the board and you use another note before you are solved for this word, the letter order of this word is unveiled.

How to win strands

In contrast to connections and words, you cannot carry out any strands. If you submit assumptions, you will either identify an answer, get an indication of a note, or the text shakes back and forth, which means that the word you submit is too short or not valid. You can no longer have any guesswork and there is no time limit.

If you have used all the letters on the board correctly, you will win, which means that you have identified the Spangram and all subject words. As with other NYT games, you see a jointly usable card when solving the puzzle, which indicates how you explained that day: blue dots 🔵 indicate that the themed words you have found are displayed. The yellow dot 🟡 indicates when you found the Spangram and a light bulb 💡 indicates words for which you have received clues.
