A normal-looking garden gnome recently made headlines in the Netherlands, but not because it protected homes from negative energy. In a bizarre turn of events, police discovered that the 2kg dwarf was actually made of MDMA. The strange discovery occurred during a major drug raid in which authorities uncovered the unusual item among other suspected narcotics. Dongemond police said in a social media post: “Drugs come in many shapes and sizes, but every now and then we come across something unusual.”

The gnome’s hands were found covering his mouth, and police jokingly added that they were “visibly shocked” by the discovery. Although the exact location and time of the raid were not announced, Dongemond police are operating in areas such as Oosterhout, Geertrudenberg, Drimmelen and Altena.

Police shared the picture of the gnome on Facebook and said: “Various types of drugs were found during a major drug raid in our area. Most of us are aware that medications come in many shapes and sizes, but every now and then we come across something unusual. During this discovery, a garden gnome was found among various substances that were suspected of being narcotic. It’s a strange place to keep your garden gnome, so we decided to test it for anesthetic substances. What happened? This almost 2 kilo garden gnome was made from MDMA. The gnome himself seemed visibly shocked by this.

A Dutch government commission said MDMA was “relatively safe” because people who use the drug face minimal health risks and have a low risk of addiction. The results published earlier this year suggested that the drug was not very safe. However, in the context of organized crime, the commission recommended that MDMA be kept on the official list of hard drugs.

In June, Brigit Toebe, head of the Dutch State Commission, told AD News that most of the MDMA produced in the Netherlands, about 90 to 99 percent, is shipped to other countries. She warned that adding MDMA to the list of soft drugs could encourage criminals to produce more of it in the country. Toebe added that crime related to MDMA production is a serious problem.
