Gaten Matarazzo revealed that his character Dustin will have to deal with great grief in the future Stranger Things Season 5 is rolling around.

Dustin’s time in Season 4 didn’t go entirely smoothly. Unfortunately, while he found a new best friend in Joseph Quinn’s Eddie, his new best friend sacrificed himself to the Demobats to save the day in The Upside Down.

There wasn’t much time until the end of season four to find out how this affected Dustin, but it seems like it will be an integral part of the character’s journey in the show’s final season.

In an exclusive interview with The Direct’s Russ Milheim while promoting his new series LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy, Gaten Matarazzo was able to briefly touch on Dustin’s journey Stranger Things‘ upcoming season 5.

The actor confirmed that Dustin will do this “Still be the guy we know and love” he will act “With great sadness at a young age:”

“…He’s still the guy we know and love, but there’s a context of that trauma and that weight of loss that seems to be with him at the start of the season, and hopefully that’s something that people like “Look, watch him grow through this arc, and see how he begins to deal with great grief at a young age.”

Matarazzo shared how he feels “Many people” will “I can really understand and understand this confusion:”

“I think a lot of people, myself included, can really relate to that confusion and that anger and understand what it can feel like. Because it’s an angry thing to deal with. So I’m excited for people to see this.”

The actor shared that there will be new seasons “a different atmosphere” in a sense, especially because of the how “Hawkins is in real confusion:”

“….I think it’s definitely a different vibe because obviously things are very different at the start of this season than they have been in the past. While we see in the last season, in Season 4, that there are rather few There are victories in the sense that it looks like Vecna has been defeated… But there is also a big, big loss, where the trenches open up in Hawkins. We see that Hawkins is in a real mess at the end of season four. And so we start this season in hindsight.”

What fans should expect from Stranger Things season 5

From the sound of it, audiences could be in for a very different Dustin the next time he appears on screen. However, it’s hard to blame him – after what he’s been through, most people would be pretty broken themselves.

Many fans have loudly expressed their wish Stranger Things To somehow bring Joseph Quinn back for the final season despite his fate in Season 4. Although it seems unlikely, anything could happen since Vecna is still active.

In April of this year, Quinn mysteriously teased that he knew if he was coming back, but he jokingly refused to reveal the answer.

Perhaps the fallout from what happened to Eddie could be used to explore the relationship between Dustin and Joe Keery’s Steve (who fans got a brief glimpse of in his Season 5 pre-vis), another fan-favorite duo of the series, to further concretize and develop it further. Thanks to Joseph Quinn’s newbie, they took a bit of a backseat in season four, but with the final season, perhaps it’s time to bring them back into the spotlight.

Stranger Things is now streaming on Netflix.
