Submerged car found in Georgia could solve 44-year-old man’s case

Human remains recently found in a vehicle submerged in a Georgia pond may be linked to a 1980 cold case in New York.

In the spring of 1980, a couple named Charles and Catherine Romer from Scarsdale, New York, were driving from Florida back to their New York home when they stopped at a Holiday Inn in Georgia. However, they were soon reported missing.

At that time, police discovered all of their belongings – except their vehicle – in their hotel room, but the couple was never found.

Now, more than four decades later, volunteer divers and investigators have discovered a car matching the description of the Romers’ vehicle at the bottom of a Georgia pond – near where the couple was last seen.

“Glynn County police, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, are currently investigating the discovery of human remains in a submerged vehicle found Friday in a pond between the Royal Inn Hotel and Interstate 95 on New Jesup Highway,” police stated of Glynn County known Facebook.

“The vehicle is similar to the description of a vehicle believed to have been driven by Charles and Catherine Romer when they were reported missing in April 1980. Investigators – with assistance from the Camden County Dive Team – found a human bone in the vehicle and the pond will be drained to see if there are any additional remains.”

The department said it does not yet know the identity of the human remains. However, “the pond will be drained and specialized equipment will be used to facilitate a thorough investigation by GCPD and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.”

The investigation is ongoing and police are asking anyone with information to call the Glynn County Police Department non-emergency number.
