Aviv, who often helped the local Jewish community, was killed early Friday, November 22, after apparently doing routine work as a locksmith. He was reportedly attacked, robbed and shot

Memphis police found his body just after 1:15 a.m. after reports of shots fired.

According to Ross Flick, managing director of Betar US, Broek’s Israeli passport was stolen.

According to media reports, Aviv’s father said his son recently moved to Memphis.

“He traveled around Los Angeles a lot,” his father said. “He worked in many areas. We talked every day. Daily. He was somewhere else and we talked about the places he visited.”

The unidentified suspect was charged with first-degree murder resulting from robbery and specifically aggravated robbery. Authorities have not said whether this is being investigated as a hate crime.

A GoFundMe campaign to help Aviv’s family pay for his funeral says the 21-year-old has a “kind heart and a bright future.”
