Suspect in theft involving dozens of MacBooks attacks police car and flees during traffic stop, police say

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – A suspected thief with dozens of laptops in his vehicle was arrested on Thanksgiving Day after he hit a police car and ran away, authorities say.

Shanan Paul McCoy Jr., 27, of Pearland, Texas, was driving a 2023 Jeep Cherokee Thursday morning that was connected to a multi-agency theft case, Louisiana State Police spokesman Matthew Gaspard said. State Police received a report that the Jeep was seen on I-10 West around 9 a.m

A trooper spotted the Jeep near Iowa and followed it onto I-210. As McCoy turned onto U.S. 90, officers and Lake Charles police attempted to stop the Jeep in the parking lot of a convenience store, Gaspard said.

McCoy refused to stop and hit a fully marked State Police car, Trooper Gaspard said. He and two passengers then ran away and McCoy was arrested after a short chase.

Investigators obtained a search warrant for the Jeep and found approximately 34 MacBook Airs, five MacBook Pros, three iPad Pros and various burglary tools and items there, Gaspard said.

McCoy was charged with aggravated assault, fleeing an officer and driving while suspended. Additional charges are expected.

The investigation is ongoing and investigators are working to identify McCoy’s passengers, Gaspard said.
