Swimming in fourth place after the first day of the Denison Invitational

– The Eastern Michigan University swimming team is in fourth place with 298.5 points as it completed the first day of the Denison Invitational on Thursday, Dec. 5, hosted by Denison University at the Trumbull Aquatic Center.

How it happened

After the morning preliminary round, Eastern started the finals with a strong second place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Marlee Christie (Seminole, Florida/Seminole), Emma Littrell (Taylor Mill, Kentucky/St. Henry District), Lucy Noble (Flagler Beach, Florida/Flagler Palm Coast)And Kiersten Russell (Clinton, Michigan/Saline) beat the Eagles’ previous season best time (1:36.76) by nearly three seconds, finishing the race in 1:33.82 and earning 62 points for EMU.

Azra Umut (Istanbul, Türkiye/Fenerbahce) secured a personal swimming best in the 500-yard freestyle. After setting a PB in the prelims (5:00.95), the freshman shaved more than a second off that time in the final run, touching the wall in 4:58.49. The A final followed Nehir Oz (Istanbul, Türkiye/Cevre)who finished eighth in 5:02.74. Russell earned points in her second event with a 14th-place finish in 5:01.02. Morgan Hofmeister (Powell, Ohio/Liberty) also scored six points and finished 22nd in 5:05.58.

Three Eagles scored points in the 200-yard IM. Tristen Mina (Santa Clara, California/The King’s Academy) With a sixth place he achieved 27 points and finished in 2:06.26. Abby Szadorski (Oswego, Ill./Oswego East) finished 12th with 18 points in 2:07.21 Maren Romine (San Antonio, Texas/International School of the Americas) finished 26th in 2:11.88 and earned two points.

Russell scored points again, this time in the 50-yard freestyle. She finished in 11th place with a personal best of 23.64. Littrell followed close behind, finishing in 13th place and also swimming a personal best of 23.71. Sophie Gatrall (Windsor, Ontario/Tecumseh Vista Academy) joined them with a PR and a 19th place finish at 24:00. Three other Eagles scored in the event, giving the Green and White a total of 54.5 points in the event.

EMU finished the finals with a seventh-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay and 58 points. Russell, Szadorski, Mina and Littrell swam a season-best time of over two seconds, finishing 3:47.87.

After the first day, Eastern is in fourth place with 298.5 points.
