Iñaki Penya and… a punishment too costly?

Szczęsny’s starting position in the Supercup semi-finals surprised everyone. Nobody expected the Polish player to be in the starting eleven and in fact he was not in Hansi Flick’s plans. However, Iñaki Penya arrived 4 minutes late for a training session and his delay cost him the starting position.

The German coach has been very strict about punctuality since the start of the season. Due to a scheduling mix-up, Jules Koundé was also on the bench in one game. Hansi Flick didn’t want to add fuel to the fire in this matter: “The noise outside is very loud. They are professionals and there is no problem.”

However, Szczęsny’s great performance in the semi-final against Athletic has reignited the debate about the goalkeeper’s position. The experienced goalkeeper proved to be very reliable between the posts and managed to keep a clean sheet. However, some think that trusting Szczęsny again would be a double, perhaps unfair and disproportionate punishment for Iñaki Penya.
