Tennis greats compete against each other at Hobart International

The 30th Hobart International Tennis Tournament concluded today at the Domain Tennis Center after another record-breaking event.

Minister for Sport and Events Nick Duigan said around 70 of the world’s top female tennis players competed during the eight-day tournament.

“Congratulations to McCartney Kessler, who was crowned singles champion, and to Xinyu Jiang and Fang-Hsien Wu, who took home the doubles trophy. “It was a great, hard-fought tournament with lots of games to watch,” said Minister Duigan.

“To celebrate the tournament’s 30th anniversary, local tennis great Angie Cunningham has been inducted into the Tennis Tasmania Hall of Fame. The Angie Cunningham Trophy is also named after Angie, who passed away in 2016.”

The Hobart International has earned a reputation for showcasing some of the best female tennis players in the world.

“The Hobart International is an important milestone in Tasmania’s packed summer events calendar and follows other popular events such as the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, Taste of Summer and BeerFest,” Minister Duigan said.

“With our strong plan for Tasmania’s future in 2030, the Tasmanian Government is committed to providing Tasmanians the opportunity to participate in live elite sporting events, inspiring our young Tasmanian athletes and promoting health and wellbeing in our community .

“Events like the Hobart International also promote Tasmania as a premier destination for sporting events and encourage interstate and international visits to our state.”

“The Tasmanian Government is proud to support Tennis Australia with $1.5 million over five years to support the delivery of the Hobart International to 2027, and an additional $50,000 to support the celebrations 30th anniversary through Events Tasmania’s Major Event Partnerships Program,” Minister Duigan said.

The Hobart International Tennis Tournament took place from January 4th to 11th, 2025.
