Thanksgiving evening is one of the most dangerous days for drunk driving in New Jersey

TRENTON, NJ – Thanksgiving Eve, commonly known as “Blackout Wednesday,” is one of the busiest drinking nights of the year in New Jersey and across the country. Officials warn that the evening that ushers in the holiday season also poses significant risks for drunk driving, binge drinking and alcohol-related deaths.

The period between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is statistically the deadliest time for alcohol-related accidents and injuries. Authorities say the combination of family reunions, social gatherings and long weekends is contributing to a rise in heavy drinking, particularly on Thanksgiving.

Law enforcement agencies across the state are increasing their patrols and DUI checkpoints to address the increase in impaired drivers. Motorists are urged to plan ahead by appointing a sober driver, arranging a taxi or rideshare, or calling a friend for a safe ride home if they plan to consume alcohol.

“At this time of year, it is critical to ensure everyone gets home safely,” officials said in a statewide warning. “Impaired driving is 100% preventable and we encourage people to make responsible decisions.”

Community leaders and safety advocates are emphasizing the importance of raising awareness during this high-risk time and reminding residents that a single decision can save lives.

New Jersey authorities are reminding residents to celebrate responsibly as holiday alcohol consumption makes the streets dangerous for everyone.
