The 10 Best New Movies and Series to Stream This Weekend on Netflix, Prime Video, and More (January 3-5)

The first weekend of the new year brings a number of new films and series on Netflix, Prime Video and other of the best streaming services.

At the top of my weekend watch list are two of my favorite films of 2024 available on premium video-on-demand: the musical blockbuster “Wicked” and the family dramedy “A Real Pain.” Also on board are new seasons of “Mayfair Witches” and “The Rig,” as well as the series debuts of real estate reality show “Selling the City” and Denis Leary’s “Going Dutch.” Also this weekend is the Golden Globes, where stars like Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Jeremy Allen White and Kristen Bell mingle (and get tipsy).

After Jo Koy hosted last year’s Golden Globes, this year’s host Nikki Glaser, who broke out on Tom Brady’s, promises to add some much-needed spark. Of course, the ceremony itself will provide some standout moments; The meeting of tipsy film and television stars is always a highlight. When it comes to actual awards, “Emilia Pérez” is at the top with 10 Golden Globe nominations On the film side, “The Bear” is at the top with five nominations, and on the TV side.

Something witchy comes along this path again. The second season of this Anne Rice adaptation begins with Rowan Mayfair (Alexandra Daddario) devastated by the unexpected birth of the demon Lasher (Jack Huston). As she struggles to determine whether he is human or monster, she remains determined to fulfill her destiny as a healer. But when tragedy strikes, Rowan is forced to abandon her personal mission to protect her family.

The latest Harlan Coben series starts the new year with a gripping mystery. Detective Kat Donovan (Rosalind Eleazar) is stunned when she spots Josh (Ashley Walters), her fiancé who disappeared 11 years ago, scrolling through a dating app. His reappearance reopens old wounds and turns her life upside down again. As Kat digs deeper, Josh’s return will draw her into the unsolved mystery of her father’s murder and unearth secrets long buried in her past.

“Lockerbie: A Search for Truth” (Peacock)

Colin Firth stars in this British miniseries inspired by true events. On December 21, 1988, Pan Am Flight 103 was crashed by a bomb over Lockerbie, Scotland, killing all 259 passengers and crew and 11 residents on the ground. As a result, Dr. Jim Swire (Firth) as spokesman for the families of the British victims, who are determined to uncover the truth. Jim’s tireless search for answers takes him across continents and across political obstacles. Along the way, his faith in the justice system begins to waver, changing his view of the world forever.

Denis Leary returns to star in his first TV series since wrapping FX’s Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll in 2016. He plays U.S. Army Colonel Patrick Quinn, a highly decorated combat commander with a talent for sassy, unfiltered remarks. After a particularly epic tirade of abuse, he is sent off to a base in the Netherlands as punishment. After spending decades in active war zones, Quinn now commands a virtually meaningless outpost – complete with a bowling alley and the army’s only bakery, but no weapons or strategic importance. He’s tasked with bringing his motley group of misfits into shape – including his own daughter.

The wave of soapy real estate reality shows shows no signs of slowing down. Soon we might even see realtors in Duluth falling for each other’s backs. The creators of “Selling Sunset” and “Selling the OC” are now turning their attention to the opposite coast with a new series set in New York City. Here, a dedicated group of sharp-tongued agents at Douglas Elliman juggle high-end luxury real estate, personal drama, inter-office rivalries and ambitious career moves.

I’ve never seen a stage production of Wicked, so I went into the film adaptation completely, well, completely green. Even with no prior knowledge and no emotional connection, it blew me away. The songs are great, of course, and it’s easy to see why the musical has been popular for so long. The choreography is infectious (see all the memes) and the excellent production design, costumes, and makeup will undoubtedly be recognized this awards season. But the performances from Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda make “Wicked” a film that truly defies gravity.

This bro-mantic dramedy relies heavily on the sizzling chemistry between its leads Jesse Eisenberg (also writer/director) and Kieran Culkin. They play Jewish-American cousins who take a trip to Poland to remember their late grandmother. Their journey is full of emotional reckonings – with their shared past, with their current alienation and with the weight of history. The relationship between the buttoned-up David and the free-spirited Benji feels so natural and effortless that you’ll wonder if Eisenberg and Culkin are somehow related in real life. They create a story that may seem heavy and ponderous, but instead feels healing and profound.

The sixth part of the animated series unfolds a new adventure for the eccentric inventor Wallace and his faithful anthropomorphic beagle Gromit. After Wallace creates a robotic garden gnome, Gromit begins to worry that Wallace is too dependent on his inventions. He’s proven right when the villainous penguin Feathers McGraw (from 1993’s The Wrong Pants) hacks into the gnome to frame Wallace and get revenge on the couple. It’s up to Gromit to fight Feathers and save Wallace before he is banned from inventing for good.
