The 2024 version honors Jimmy Carter

LINCOLN – A Rhode Island company has once again made the official White House Christmas ornament, and it has the look and feel of the Ocean State.

The ornament, made by Beacon Design in Lincoln, resembles an anchor and honors Jimmy Carter, the 39th president.

“The anchor shape of the ornament, an iconic symbol of hope, also represents Carter’s service in the United States Navy,” the White House Historical Association says on its website.

Beacon Design, a division of ChemArt, calls its work with the association “one of our greatest success stories.” The annual ornament program began in 1981 and each year a new design is released highlighting the White House anniversary or the accomplishments of a presidential administration. According to Beacon Design, more than 1 million of the ornaments are sold annually.

The 2024 draft “highlights historic moments” from Carter’s life and presidency, the association says. It is crafted from solid brass, finished with 24-karat gold and screen-printed with multiple colors including blue, red, green, white and gold.

“Both the front and back of the ornament depict peace doves, a symbol of President Carter’s commitment to peace in the Middle East and perhaps most significantly of the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty signed March 26 on the North Lawn of the White house was signed. 1979,” says the association.

“The back of the ornament features the Seawolf-class USS Jimmy Carter (SSN-23). It was commissioned in 2005 and is the only submarine named after a living president,” the association says. “The globe in the center represents Carter’s lifelong commitment to environmental conservation. At the base of the anchor is a garland of peanut blossoms, a reminder of Carter’s years as a farmer and businessman in Plains, Georgia.”
