December starts off with a bang as big stars appear in new TV shows premiering on Netflix, Disney Plus and other streaming services, as well as broadcast and cable TV networks.

This week’s new TV program gets a big dose of Christmas cheer from pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter, who presents her ‘Nonsense Christmas’ special. Meanwhile, Keira Knightley stars in the spy thriller Black Doves and Jude Law is the adult in the children’s adventure Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.

After the darker, more adult tone of “The Acolyte,” Disney’s “Star Wars” television universe turns to a more youthful adventure story that has a strong “Goonies” vibe. Showrunners Jon Watts and Chistopher Ford have been open about taking inspiration from the 1985 classic and even considered casting some “Goonies” stars as adult characters. Instead, Jude Law hosts the show as Jod Na Nawood, a Force user who relies on his charm to get out of sticky situations. But the real protagonists are four children – Wim (Ravi Cabot-Conyers), Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong), KB (Kyriana Kratter), Neel (Robert Timothy Smith) – who come across a discovery on their home planet and end up lost the huge galaxy.

When Helen’s secret lover is murdered, her enigmatic carer Reed (Sarah Lancashire) calls her old friend Sam (Ben Whishaw) to ensure her safety. Together, Helen and Sam investigate the death and uncover a vast conspiracy that links London’s underworld to an impending geopolitical crisis.

The first entry in James Gunn’s new DC Universe (DCU), this animated adventure features a team of imprisoned monsters recruited by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) for missions deemed too dangerous for humans. General Rick Flag Sr. (Frank Grillo) leads the group, which includes Frankenstein (David Harbour), Princess Ilana (Maria Bakalova), Dr. Phosphorus (Alan Tudyk), Nina Mazursky (Zoë Chao), the Bride (Indira Varma) and Circe (Anya Chalotra) and GI Robot (Sean Gunn). Think Suicide Squad, but even more violent and foul-mouthed.

A true story called “The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Robbery” serves as the inspiration for this dramedy reminiscent of a Coen Brothers film. Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale) is a maple syrup farmer who is at risk of losing her property to a corrupt local bureaucrat. Down-on-his-luck security guard Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr) and Boston gangster Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) make her a proposition: millions of dollars are at stake in what could be the sweetest heist in Canadian history. But a series of missteps leads to a body, with Detective Valérie Nadeau (Suzanne Clément) and police officer Teddy Green (Gita Miller) hot on her trail.

Grammy-nominated pop star Sabrina Carpenter puts down the “Espresso” to present her first-ever variety musical special, featuring performances of songs from her holiday EP “Fruitcake” and other hit holiday covers. The special also includes duets with Chappell Roan, Tyla, Shania Twain and Kali Uchis, as well as comedic appearances from Nico Hiraga, Quinta Brunson, Cara Delevingne, Kyle Mooney, Megan Stalter, Sean Astin, Owen Thiele and Jillian Bell.
