The 50 most common passwords and how to start creating stronger passwords

Bank accounts, social media profiles, streaming platforms, and even smart refrigerators require passwords these days. Keeping track of a long list of passwords can be difficult, as can creating new, unique passwords.

For the sixth time, NordPass, an online password manager, has published a list of the 200 most common passwords – ones that should be avoided because they are so easy to “crack” or hack.

To create its list, NordPass worked with partner NordSteller, a threat risk management platform. The two platforms analyzed 2.5 terabytes of data from 44 countries, extracted from publicly available sources, including those on the dark web. NordPass and NordStellar analyzed passwords stolen by malware or exposed by data leaks. (No personal data was analyzed for the study.)

Across all 44 countries surveyed, the table below shows the 50 most commonly used passwords, many of which can be hacked in less than a second.

Is your password “123456”? You should probably think about changing it

According to NordPass, the password “123456” was the most commonly used password five out of the six years the study was conducted. The six-digit all-number password is even more popular than the classic “password”.

How to create a strong password

NordPass recommends that online users create passwords that are at least 20 characters long, even if a platform only requires an eight-character password.

Passwords should be a mix of upper and lower case letters, numbers and special characters such as “%”, “!” And “@.” Avoid using easy-to-guess information such as names, birthdays, and common words.

Also, never use passwords again.

What is the best way to store passwords?

According to the UK’s National Cyber Security Center, password managers like NordPass are the best tools for storing passwords. Password managers store passwords securely on a mobile device or computer. Once a user logs into a password manager, all passwords for online accounts are generated and stored.
