The agency renewed Showtime for Season 2 after the record debut weekend

The agency has scored a quick season two renewal on Showtime after a monster debut weekend.

The first two episodes of the spy thriller have reached 5.1 million global “viewers” on streaming and linear since premiering on November 29th. According to Paramount Global, it is Showtime’s most-streamed new series in history, although no streaming-specific numbers were available.

(While Paramount advertises viewers, it’s important to note that with Paramount+, the company can’t determine how many people are watching via a single stream, or whether anyone is watching at all. This likely means Paramount is actively using “sub-budgets” as a proxy for streaming viewers.)

“The success of The agency is evidence that our new Showtime programming will propel Paramount+ into its next phase of growth,” said Chris McCarthy, Paramount Global Co-CEO and President/CEO of Showtime & MTV Entertainment Studios, in a statement.

The agency is inspired by French drama The Bureau of Legends. It’s about Martian (Michael Fassbender), an undercover CIA agent who is ordered to give up his undercover life and return to the London train station. When the love he left behind resurfaces, romance reignites. His career, his true identity, and his mission are at odds with his heart; They both become embroiled in a deadly game of international intrigue and espionage.

The series also stars Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston, John Magaro, Alex Reznik and Andrew Brooke, Harriet Sansom Harris, India Fowler, Saura Lightfoot-Leon, Reza Brojerdi and Richard Gere. Dominic West and Hugh Bonneville guest star. The returning cast includes Adam Nagaitis, Ambreen Razia, Bilal Hasna, David Harewood, Kurt Egyiawan, Ray BLK, Sabrina Wu and Tom Vaughan-Lawlor.

The agency is executive produced by Keith Cox and Nina L. Diaz (Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios); David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, David Hutkin and Bob Yari (101 Studios), George Clooney and Grant Heslov (Smokehouse Pictures); Alex Berger (TOP – The Originals Productions); and Ashley Stern and Pascal Breton (Federation Studios/Federation Entertainment of America); and Fassbender. Jez and John-Henry Butterworth are writers and executive producers; Joe Wright is executive producer and director of the first two episodes.

The agency is currently available to all Paramount+ subscribers in the US with the Showtime add-on, as well as Paramount+ internationally in the UK, Canada, Australia, Italy, Germany, Latin America and Brazil. The series is also set to debut in Japan next year.
