The Alabama Community College System is introducing new programs to improve the state’s health care system

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Over the past few years, the state has worked with the Alabama Community College System and medical officials to make this announcement possible.

The system now offers 22 licensed practical nursing programs and 14 apprenticeships.

“There are thousands upon thousands of positions in hospitals today that we cannot fill,” said Peggy Benson of the Alabama Board of Nursing.

These programs will fill more than 2,000 of these vacancies. Specifically, the certified nursing support technician training program allows students to work alongside a nurse while assisting hospitals in need of medical staff.

Alabama is one of the first states to offer this program, with other states emulating the criteria.

Even high school students take part. Of the 13,000 students already enrolled in these courses, 12% are double majors.

Officials believe creating opportunities for a good-paying job will only benefit communities, particularly rural parts of Alabama.
