In this episode, director Ellen Kuras, ASC, and cameraman Paweł Edelman, PSC, talk to interviewer Erik Messerschmidt, ASC, about their work lee – the biographical drama documenting the life and indelible work of photojournalist Lee Miller.

lee tells the story of Elizabeth “Lee” Miller (Kate Winslet), a photographer and model who became a war correspondent for fashion during World War II and ultimately captured some of the most powerful and harrowing moments of that time. The film marks Kuras’ directorial debut and earned Edelman a nomination for Camerimage’s Golden Frog Award at the 2023 edition.

In this interview, Kuras and Edelman discuss recreating Miller’s iconic imagery through the use of natural light and period-specific design. the challenges of filming in multiple countries with tight schedules while maintaining visual continuity; using the Arri Alexa 35 and grading production on set; how they balanced historical accuracy and artistic license to create an impactful narrative, and more.


Ellen Kuras, A.S.C is a filmmaker whose camera work includes, among other things Imagine it was a city, David Byrne’s American Utopia, Summer by Sam And Eternal sunshine of the flawless mind. In addition to lee – her feature film debut – she directed the Oscar-nominated documentary The Betrayal (Nerakhoon)which she also shot.

Paweł Edelman, PSC is a Polish cinematographer whose works include The Pianist (2002), Oliver Twist (2005)And Ray (2005). For The pianistHe was nominated for both an Oscar and an ASC Award. He also received an ASC Award nomination for his work Ray.
