The Beulah native uses social media to make people smile and embrace their true selves

FARGO, N.D. (KFYR) – Social media is full of unrealistic expectations: filters that make people look flawless, images that make other people’s lives look perfect, and dreams that are always fulfilled. It can leave us feeling like we are not enough.

But there’s one woman from North Dakota who’s keeping things real online while having fun.

The good news: Lauren Midwest not only makes people laugh, she hopes she also inspires her followers to stay true to themselves.

Lauren Trefethren is working on her latest Instagram reel. The idea behind it: How her idea of her “dream man” changed as she got older.

Trefethren grew up in Beulah.

“I will forever be a Beulah Miner,” she said with a smile.

She now lives in Fargo with her three children and her husband, the man who inspired her latest video.

Trefethren has been on Instagram for years, but she started posting fun Midwestern content about a year ago.

“I made a few videos to be funny and make myself laugh,” she explained.

Her videos on her Lauren Midwest page made not only Trefethren laugh, but thousands of others as well. She quickly grew from about a thousand followers to over 31,000.

“It’s been a really wild and really fun year,” Trefethren said.

“It’s embarrassing to admit that I do a lot of things just to make myself laugh sometimes,” Trefethren said.

She also has a serious side. Trefethren hopes that by simply being herself, she can inspire others to do the same.

“I think the more authentic we can be online, the healthier it is online, rather than these unrealistic expectations of how to be a mother, how to be a woman, how to be all of those things.” None of us are doing it right. Let’s all just show up as who we are and make sure everyone else is in the same boat,” she said.

It’s a lesson she wants to teach her followers and her daughters – to be her authentic self online and in real life.
